  • Cancelling a render during LightCache Calcualtion Hangs Max

Cancelling a render during LightCache Calcualtion Hangs Max. The CPU Usage viewed in the task manager remains at between 50% and 54% and there is no option but to cancel the process.

    VERY ANNOYING.

Hmm ok, well i just tried that here and had no problems at all.

What sort of scene are you rendering? is it a really large/heavy scene?

Abit more detail would be handy as well.
What vray version, max version, how much ram you have...etc.

      Hey,

Im experiencing this too...theres no particular reason for it either...sometime it happens and other times it doesnt. What does work tho, is if you just leave max (stop clicking altogether in fact) and wait..it might take 3-4 mins to catch up.

My thoughts were that if it was a really heavy scene, it could just be the memory unloading type of thing.

Similar to in the scanline days, when you render a scene with lots of raytracing, and you clicked cancell. That took ages to stop.
        Maybe something similar?

yeah i think your right ... i think its just a matter of unloading a heavy scene... the smaller the scene the quicker the cancel..... Like putting on the breakes at 100 mph .... or 10 mph...

The same problem - but I can say it happens only BEFORE lightcahe or any prepasses(cancel render before any calculations)
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

Do you guys have more than one Processor or HT enabled?
Also what's your "number of passes" in the lightmap?
(use a number similar to the number of your processors)

                Cancel

Same issue here. My cancel is grayed out. I probably have to kill my job and start it again. I am waiting for my MAX 2009 and I'll install VRSP2 and see if it resolves it.

                    Hang

1.5 SP1. I ended up merging the scene into a blank scene.

Do you still have a copy of the original problemmatic scene that you can send over to vlado@chaosgroup.com so that I can investigate?

                      Best regards,

                        cancel

I have since deleted it after I merged it over to a new one. If it happens again I'll be sure to save it.

Happened to me last night. Had added some displacement and cancelled during lightcache process. Unfortunately I hadn't saved for a while, so I decided to let the machine and Max stay on while I went to bed. Next day the "calculation" had finished and I could save my scene.

Edit: Using Max 2008 and 1.50.SP1

The same thing seems to happen in Max 2009 with Vray 1.50.sp2
