Yep, you'd mentioned something last year, really excited to see what it brings!

I'll poke you via email about it, if you don't mind.

Great job guys, a feature long needed, and seems to be perfect!
Might I ask - could you record and run those same test scenes with the feature disabled - this will help demo the time saved on scenes like this?

            +1 for that m_hinks

^Lele^, can we also see how this method performs when using DR?

yes +1 for DR. We just said that internally!

For DR, we have slightly different (and to a degree concurrent) approaches in the works, so to minimise the network traffic.
We'll be sure to show you the goods as we have them!

                  It's highly scene dependent.
On some of Olli's scenes, set up with 256 max AA subdivs to cater for moblur and dof, it was around two thirds of the original time.
However, we didn't have the whole scene, but parts of it, over black, so it could be deceiving.
In other scenes it may be less, depending on a host of factors: max sampling, image filter type and size, and most of all, size of the hyper-sampled areas (i.e. if it's a single pixel, or a shareable, multi-taskable area.).

We'll share all the info promptly as we have them.
We're still working on a few aspects of this, so it'll take some more time, unfortunately.

On that note, ensure you do not use phong/blinn shaders, or perfect reflectors (i.e. gloss at 1.0), as we found plenty of those (from the looks of it, leftovers) and they are quite troublesome with your average setup (and are old and/or unphysical.).
Here's a simple script to sanity check a scene (if you want to run through a scene and make the changes, simply stand on the "alt+y" key combo).
You mean reducing gloss to 0.99 would help?

Yep, anything but 1.0 will help diffuse the energies.
Of course, the lower the gloss level you can get away with, the better.
For example, the script itself reduces it to 0.995 (to avoid altering looks), but a 0.9 would be better.
You can search the script for the 0.995 value and change it to what you can afford.

EDIT: to be clear: most of the issues with stuck buckets stem from having a single pixel, or very small clump thereof, with exceptionally high values, far removed from their surroundings.
This is why perfectly sharp reflectors are bad: if one sees a sun disk, that little point will produce a reflection of perhaps 1500 float, and antialiasing that pixel against the surroundings will invariably bring the engine to the ends of max AA.
If however that reflection was broader, the energies would diffuse, therefore creating a smoother gradient, much easier to AA, regardless of the additional sampling required for a rough reflection compared to a sharp one.
Further, a single pixel isn't currently multi-tasked (although it may be in the future), so it would make the current technique less effective.

The new solution is now merged into the latest stable nightlies - https://nightlies.chaos.com/main#/vr...ble/stable_5.2

                              Waiting for your feedback
If it was that easy, it would have already been done
