  • MAx 2022.1 Vray 5.1.3 with freshly installed substance(sbsar) crashes or loses connection to the shader.

Hi all, I will post this in Adobe Substance forums too. I am trying to use an sbsar shader with the substance2 map connection to a vray material. I just tweaked the colour corrections a bit but in general it is a vanilla connection. So i start working and everything looks fine ... but after a while the shader loses connection. It appears white or black and then in general things crash. I have done two or three projects without substance so far and i didn't have any issues. So i am relatively confident that this issue is substance - vray related. Is there an updated susbstance plugin ? Am i doing anything wrong. I just load the sbsar file on an empty substance2 node and then I click substance to vray.

Are you getting something like this:

After long scene testing with the Substance 2 map, the connection between the diffuse slots was missing and there was a crash when the Displacement was disconnected at the end. I'm not sure if this is a V-Ray issue actually, will perform more tests to see how it behaves with the other engines.

      Hi Tashko ,
No the material links are normal, but the render output is black for the substance material. It is difficult to replicate but i got it twice without touching the material. Randomly after a normal progressive render the next one turned black ... then no matter what I did the material couldn't render properly. I restarted max or the whole machine and it was fixed. I got it twice yesterday but not today (even though I am not doing that many renders today). I rendered two animations all fine ... I haven't discovered why it crashes. My gut feeling is that it is some sort of cache memory that gets corrupted ... but I am not a developer.

Random issues are difficutl to catch, but we can try your setup here if you can send a sample or the entire project. You can use the "Submit a request" from https://support.chaos.com , we have an option to upload files.

              Hi guys,

I used to get this happening a lot as well, I gave up using the substance link for about a year, recently tried it with the new updates to all the software and it's definitely less of an occurence, alas it still happens.

I feel your pain Alex, only way I got it to work is to reload the material again. Strange that this hasn't been picked up before.

As yet I can't figure out the trigger.

              Cheers,

              Jason
