  • Are Tracesets broken?

How do I enable tracesets in Vray 5? If I exclude an object from reflections they still are reflected. Did I forget how to use reflection exclusions or is there a bug?

Specifically Reflection tracesets don't seem to work (3ds Max 2022, vray 5 - 1.3). Refraction trace sets do work.

No problems here same vray - max. Click an object > vray properties > tracesets > reflection exclude > choose which one not to reflect in this object > OK > close.

Is the teapot in the attached scene actually excluded though? Max 2022?

Sorry I didn't see you attached a scene. You need to do it the other way around. Instead of assigning the plane to the reflection exclusion of the teapot, you need to assign the teapot in the reflection exclusions of the plane.

Huh... I had done it both ways and it didn't work. But what I'm finding is that if I close the vray tracesets window... and then re-open it... about 50% of the time it doesn't actually save. I just did it 3 times and it only stuck the last time. Every other time I reopend the trace sets after OK'ing out the whole way back to the viewport it actually saved the change.

That's strange, I don't seem to experience this problem. Might be Max related? Do you have this with other dialogues?

im.thatoneguy Thanks for the provided scene. I managed to reproduce the issue (on a fresh scene as well) - it seems to happen when one object is already excluded by another (preventing mutual exclusion). I'll notify the developers and write back.

Thanks for tracking down the root cause! Yep can confirm, the settings actually are applied as long as they aren't excluding eachother.

Ok so the second level of confusion is that if you move the seek head to a different frame # IPR sometimes ignores the tracesets, leading to the impression that they won't be applied.

It seems that objects excluding one another's reflections create a dependency loop and was never possible. If the effect is of importance, you may try using a VRayOverrideMtl to override a shader's reflection, however, this will affect all reflections.
