  • Scene crashes during render. Urgent.

I've been troubleshooting a scene I've been working on for a few days now.

Basically, within a few minutes of the render firing off, I get the submit crash report dialog box appear! I've checked the dmp log and its suggesting a forest pack issue but there is no FP in the scene (anymore, switched ti sini scatter to see if that resolved it). I've gone through countless iterations of the file, via process of elimination but I'm no closer to a solution. Nothing noteworthy in the vray log either.

    3ds Max 2022
    Latest V-ray
    Latest ForestPack
    i9-12900k (ecores unlocked)
    128gb RAM

Can I arrange a file transfer to someone here to take a look? Nothing crazy going on in the scene, just your average ArchViz setup.

    Many thanks

Thanks for the crash dump. Are you certain this one is from rendering - looking into it I only see Max trying to do a file merge and crashing ?

Interesting. Yes. This during rendering it can be anywhere between 2-8 and minutes into it. It just happened again. I've uploaded another dmp file.

I've tried a new scene and piecemeal merging in different elements from the problem file then trying to render again. It doesn't seem to matter.

I've also tried rendering a scene from another job with heavy asset use and Forest pack objects and it renders fine. Seems to be specific to this scene. SpecificAsset/Plugin/Geo/Materials?

I've noted that even if you delete the FP icon itself there are things that remain frozen/hidden, so could it be these maybe, for whatever reason?
A long shot maybe, but if it says it's an FP issue then something FP'ish must be involved, no?

I've ran a scene checker to remove any reference to FP. Also, deleted any assets previously linked to an FP icon. Tried a fresh scene and merged in nothing but the scene geo (building etc) with no luck so far.

Hm I don't see anything FP related in the second crash dump. Unfortunately not much info still. Do you have many render elements - if yes, can you try to disable them all to see if it renders ? Another thing - is it possible that you are running out of RAM ?

I've tried rendering without any elements to no avail.

My RAM usage never exceeds 40% in total whilst rendering this scene.

Ok - just to be sure - can you try with the latest stable (https://nightlies.chaos.com/main#/vr...e_5.2/20220426) Alternatively - if you can - send the scene to our support.

I've had some time to test a separate simple scene with settings cranked up. My issue appears to be random.

It will render out a full image, then other times not and it crashes. I would try a nightly version of v-ray but I'd have to book it in with IT. Can you think of any reason why this might happen randomly? I've tried a reset to factory settings of max. Default max start scene. No render elements. The only thing I can think of is some process/service linked to v-ray firing out across the internet and failing. I'm truly at a loss. Any ideas on how I can nail this down?

If it happens on any scene then it is hard to say..
Do you stop the render manually and then Max crashes or you just leave it render and it just crashes ? (There was a bug that if you manually stop the render at some specific moment it might crash - it is fixed in the stable nightlies).

Other than that - if possible - send us a few of the crash dumps from those random crashes - some of them might have some hint..

This issue is only present in CPU. We made a change most of our machines in regards to this thread.

Is the issue resolved in the nightlies for this specific processor?

I'm not sure I understand what change did you make to most of your machines?

We are not aware of issues related to specific processors. If you mean the new Alder Lake CPUs - as it is stated in the other forums (and in our support pages) - Alder Lake CPUs require Windows 11 and it is not up to us to fix anything.
