  • Bad EXR render output

I rendered about 72 frames and all of them came out looking like attachment 1. In the VFB, the image renders fine but when I load the EXR file in both Photoshop and the VFB, they look like the attachment. In addition, the EXR file has no layers. Please see the other attachment for my render output settings. I haven't quite figured out how to save each frame with all the render elements embedded in a single file and I suspect that the cause of the issue has to do with my render output settings.

    V-Ray 5 5.20.23 (build 00002)
    Denoiser enabled

Any help is much appreciated, thank you in advance.

UPDATE: When I load the EXR in the material editor with a max bitmap node, the image is fine. See attachment 3. So maybe not a bad EXR after all? Then why does it look like a bad file in Photoshop, After Effects and the VFB?

Presumably you have the PS/AE plugin to import?
If not, then you can get it here https://www.exr-io.com/
That should allow it all to import correctly

That's what I'm using for PS. AE has native support for EXRs.

When I choose Split Alpha, I get the correct image in PS. But how do you do that in AE?

This is all very different behavior from when I render a still and choosed Save to single file. And I'm still not getting any render elements. Why is the automated render output process when rendering animations so different?

          "Interpret Footage"

For render elements, you needf to set up the EXR output (you're using the Max one, instead of V-Ray's own raw file save), and ensure it adds the REs.

Thank you for the reply. I'm still brand new to putting together an animation, obviously, so I especially appreciate the help!

Ignoring alpha under interpret footage just leaves me with all white. However, that doesn't really matter because solving the render elements has solved that problem.

For anyone else who may be wondering the same thing, under Render Setup > Common > Render Output make sure Save File is switched OFF. Even though I had been setting up the render output from under VRay > Frame Buffer > VRay Raw Image, the Save File option under the Common tab seemed to be overriding it. When the EXR comes through with all the render elements, the alpha issue is no longer present.

Another issue I've run into now, which is related, is batch rendering and saving all render elements to a single file... does not work when using the Max batch render tool. Is there a V-Ray batch render? Perhaps this is more deserving of its own thread...

                Use the raw file output.
