  • Vray Toon's exclude doesn't work with Chaos Scatter?

I have a scene where I've scattered a bunch of shrubs and trees with Chaos scatter. In the same scene I have Vray Toon turned on with exclude enabled where I've excluded the layers that contain the trees and shrubs. Nevertheless, Vray applies the toon effect on the objects within the excluded layers. The hedges around the houses, which were scattered with Itoo Forest Pack, doesn't have this problem and are properly excluded from the toon effect. Am I doing something wrong? I'm using 3ds Max 2023 and V-Ray 6 hotfix 2.

Hi Alex. I'm not able to reproduce the result mentioned above. Could you share a bit more about your layer setup? Some hedges in between the black spots are rendered fine. Are they a part of the same scatter? Can you reproduce the issue with a more simplified scene?

Thanks for the quick reply, dimitar_panayotov . Those small hedges that don't have outlines are part of the shrubs layer, but are not part of the Chaos Scatter so they rendered fine. In a very simple scene I don't see this issue. It seems that it only happens in more complex scenes.

Where are positioned the source objects? Are they in the excluded layers? Please share more about your layer structure.

Yes, all Chaos Scatter objects and all models that are scattered are inside the excluded "Shrubs" and "Trees" layers. See below. By the way, I've just replaced all Chaos Scatters with Forest Pack scatters. No issues now. Seems like problem with Chaos Scatter.

Hi Alex. I'm glad that you found a solution. The issue is transferred to our developers and we will look into it. It would be great if you can provide a scene including only the problematic objects. You can attach the scene by submitting a request from your Chaos account panel. This will help us as a starting point. We appreciate your effort and time.

Can you detail the results of which cases have the bug? I ran into this yesterday. I ended up turning off the scatter layer because I didn’t need it when I used VRayToon, and then disabling VRayToon when I rendered the scatter objects. (Rendering passes for some comp magic.)

Would be interesting to know exactly when it happens. Thanks.

Hi, Joelaff . Are you asking me or? I don't really know what causes the bug. I only know that it happens with more complex scenes. Very simple scene with scattered teapots seems to work fine.

Interesting. OK. Yes, that was my experience. It didn't seem to happen all the time. Sometimes I would pick it up in IPR, or the render. I finally just turned off the VRayToon for the non-toon render, which luckily worked for my setup. It was only on my Chaos scatters, and not on my Forest either.

Hi as far as I was able to test it has a random element to it. Also when adding/removing objects the toon does not shade them always as in the include/exclude list if we have Chaos Scatter in the scene.
I couldn't get the Scatter to have toon effect if I add other objects to exclude. If I switched to include though it works.
So you may try the include option and invert your selection and see if this works.
