Interiors baffle me. I have enormous windows, an override gray material, V-Ray Sun/Sky, and so much noise after 10 minutes that it makes be think I am missing something. What is the secret sauce to make this work? Yes denoiser is on (.4).

if you use BF/LC in interior you will get such noise, no real way to solve it other then let it render for longer. I thought gpu was suppose to be much quicker, is it the case?Dmitry Vinnik

I can let these bake overnight and they are still noisy as hell! I have a 3080 graphics card, but it only has 12GB of RAM. Most of the times I hit render on GPU and absolutely nothing happens; I am assuming it is a RAM issue.
Six hours and not usable!

Here is the start of a kitchen. Simple overrirde material, with a V-Ray Sun/Sky.

Here are two interiors, both I had to put through Topaz DeNoiser. They are okay, but really soft due to the lack of detail.

Hi Bobby I had a look at your scene. It seems you have 2 dome lights in the scene one with vray sky one without both are turned on. I think that may contribute to render time, I don't recommend using occlusion as it also adds to render time. I've switched off denoiser and rendered it with progressive for 1 minute on my threadripper 64 core.

I don't like using progressive though, I've done 1/10 bucket and after 4 minutes I got this result. Its getting pretty clean after 4 minutes on my machine, but of course with textures and shader it would take longer. Both renders were done at 3840x2160 as you had it set.

I think the extra dome was me testing things. I haven't tried buckets in forever; I will start there.Bobby Parker

Things will be much cleaner, much quicker.
If you're on 6.1, remember to test the PGL toggle in the LC, as you may be getting free speed ups (but no promises!).
EDIT: i should read whole threads before replying. -.-'Lele

Yes, I have placed the skymap into the dome light. I'll try the PGL toggle... thank you!Bobby Parker

Notes:
*) The override material has a Dirt map in the diffuse. That will cost you rendertime, and should really not be needed when the primary engine is Brute Force.
*) The sun *disk* is visible. Make it invisible to avoid uncleanable fireflies in specular materials. (but it doesn't affect the scene as it is now.)
*) Auto-exposure throws people off too often: if you check the lighting from the outside, you'll notice you're lighting your interior *entirely* with indirect light (more precisely: indirect sun caustics.) as the windows are in shadow.
This is complicated to calculate, so it's slow.
You can ameliorate this with more LC subdivs (say, 3000), and at least for the scene with the override, turning on Path Guiding.
I have made the changes above to the scene file, and with PGL active, i get this rendered out at 1080p (so, a quarter of the time of your 4k) in 3 minutes exactly, on a 7950X with all-core clock of 4.35Ghz. (purposefully limited to benchmark.).
Without PGL, it renders identically, but in 4 minutes and a half.
Fixing a low max AA is strongly *not* suggested since the adaptive sampler came into being in V-Ray 3.3.
It will leave variable noise across the image, and not be able to clean what it really should: it will produce decent results only in excessively simple scenes, like the one above.
Rather, the noise threshold (plus denoising) should be used in its place if one wants a quicker render.
For bucket don't go below 24 subdivs, and rather move them to 100 and forget them entirely.
Adaptive bucket splitting will ensure optimal load until render end (or close enough to not matter).Lele

Lele have you tried using gpu for this, in my test on 3090 it did not perform particularly well. I.e i got same noise amount in same render time as the cpu render.Dmitry Vinnik

I am giving it a go with colors and materials. My 3090 fails, so I'll be using CPU and porgressive. I might try bucket later.Bobby Parker

Bobby do you mind sharing your final scene with us so we can troubleshoot it, perhaps it can improve vray to a degree. I would strongly suggest upgrading your pc though!Dmitry Vinnik
