  • Giant log file problem identified!

I think I found out why people got insanely huge vray log files (in the range of gigabytes)

I created a circle, extruded it, added an epoly modifier on it, inset one of the big faces, extruded that, and added a uvw mapping and vray displacement mod. Assigned my map, 2d mapping, hit render.

It goes through the calculations slowly, and throws these two lines over and over and over in the log window:

    Code:
    [2005/Aug/12|12:48:50] warning: Invalid texture derivatives (UVW 1.#QNAN, 1.#QNAN, 1.#QNAN).
    [2005/Aug/12|12:48:50] warning: Invalid geometric normal (0 0 0) for "Circle01".
    [2005/Aug/12|12:48:50] warning: Invalid texture derivatives (UVW 1.#QNAN, 1.#QNAN, 1.#QNAN).
    [2005/Aug/12|12:48:50] warning: Invalid geometric normal (0 0 0) for "Circle01".

My log file hit 15MB in under a minute.

Ok, its not the circle + epoly mess, I've tried it on a cylinder primitive and get the same results.

Ok, I seem to have found the problem.

If I switch to 3D mapping for the displacement, the warning goes away, hence no gigantic logfile.

running into it here also with 2d displacements.. repeating invalid geometric normal problem (0,0,0)

displacing essentially a high frequency gradient ramp out of a box..

3d appears to ditch the error, but it takes MUCH longer to render, and looks much lower in quality since its a fixed number of faces

None of the options in the displacementmodifier seem to make any changes to the error.

Will be looking at this; in the meantime, you can disable the log file by clearing the file name in the System rollout.
