New computer, same issues. No setting save. For instance, when I drag the VFB history to the left, it'll return when I reboot MAX. The same for my custom toolbar, and everything else. This only started happening after I installed V-Ray. I set up my tool bar, opened and closed MAX many times to test, installed V-Ray, and them my saved settings stopped working. Things like viewport settings don't save.... again, only after I installed V-Ray. Cosmos didn't work, so I manually gave myself full rights, so it is probably a buried rights issue. What files/folders need full rights? I am a local admin, but again, it didn't matter to Cosmos. And yes, I open MAX as an admin.

I wonder if it is from opening max as an admin somehow writing the prefs as the admin, and then your normal user can’t overwrite them later??

I have it set up to always open as an admin. If you Google the issue, it is a known issue.

Yes, I did. It didn't start being a problem until I installled V-Ray (as admin)

I wonder if that is the issue. I never run as admin. I just let the installer ask for elevate privileges when necessary.

No clue. It may be an "known issue," but thankfully it is not a known issue here. But I can't tell you why not.

I wish we could get Max for linux and throwaway this silly Windows stuff once and for all.
