  • DR Rendering

I have PTSD from network rendering when I had a render farm ten years ago, which is flaring up with my one new network node. It only works 1/2 the time, and nothing changes to cause it to stop working. Sometimes, I get a network refusal message, and other times, nothing. Sometimes, stopping and starting the service works, and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes, rebooting the slave machine works, and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes, I get a scene-transferred message, but it never joins. Right now, I have a scene-transferred message, and an hour into the render, the slave machine hasn't jumped in. I have both computers connected directly via one Cat6 cable. Why hasn't network rendering gotten any better over ten years? How do you guys put up with this? Is there a better way? I feel like a render scene babysitter!

Still... my render node is useless if it only works sometimes.

[13:29:33.636] Server 192.168.1.1:20204: Scene loaded; starting render

    [13:29:46.255] Server 192.168.1.1:20204: Starting frame 0

[13:30:19.068] Warning : Render host alienwarei7 (192.168.1.1:20204) is not responding

Over and over. I can restart the service, and reboot the machine, and sometimes it'll work and sometimes it won't.

What can I do to troubleshoot this?

Here are my licenses. I don't know why 3ds Max says 0 in use.

Another one. Rebooted both machines. This has sat there rendering on the one PC for 35 minutes and nothing has moved on the render node.

2:45 into the render, nothing has moved on my render node, and no errors.

Hi, thanks for posting. Try a simple scene. If you have enough license and the simple scene goes every time with no issues then it may be something in your production scene. If the simple scene does not work then you may be having issues with your network setup. How do you manage your assets, do you use "transfer missing assets"? Your both computers must use the same path to assets for best results. Is this possible with a twisted pair cable? If you have issues with every scene please open a ticket to technical support so they can review your network setup.

I just ran a simple scene, and the render node started within 3 minutes. I have transferred missing assets checked, but sometimes it becomes unchecked; that is one of the first things I look at when the render node fails.

Hey glorybound, try disabling windows defender on the slave machine, especially turning off "realtime protection" from the virus & threat prottection settings.

I have tried that and turned off the firewall. Right now, the simpler scene is renderings, so it doesn't seem to be a computer issue.

You are using a wired network, right? Not trying to use wifi or something?

That is a good call. Make sure you do not have any intermittent issues with your network. If you are losing connection to the slave randomly this may disturb the rendering process.

Yes, CAT 6 back to back.
