As I was looking into buying one of these, this thread popped up: CPU render hard crash Intel cpu's - Chaos Forums and I decided not to. Chaos had apparently some reports already stating these CPUs are quite unstable so I would return to sender as long as you can and go with an AMD instead. It's a shame really, I used to be pro-Intel because AMD was always the one with problems, now it seems it's the opposite for some models.

If you go with AMD's 7950X be sure to get the right RAM, especially if you want the full 192G (max stable 4800-5200GHz) or any other 4 bank config. The July 31st presented 9950X will be slightly faster but more importantly should have better energy consumption and a more stable memory controller. But from the past I know you might have to wait a month to get one with the right board.

Isn't that like driving your car with the handbrake on?

What motherboard do you have? Many motherboard manufacturers released a bios update that fixes the instability issue without decreasing performance as much as you did by disabling hyper threading. There is a lot of info online, please research a little bit.

Today Intel has (semi)officially anounced a microcode patch for half of august to solve any remaining instabilities. But you still have to be sure to install the latest updates for your motherboard, to keep your cpu running within Intel specs. Also there is a way to check whether your cpu is already affected (read ruined!) by wrong bios settings; either by installing the whole NVidia GeForce driver package 5-10 times hoping you don't get the "unable to install" message (most reliable),or by running Cinebench a few times. If you get errors, contact Intel CS and ask for a replacement. After applying the microcode patch I wouldn't settle on anything resulting in lower performance, like disabling HT. Systems with the fastest CPU generally also use more expensive components to keep everything cool and quiet to ensure that cpu is functioning at top speed!

My i9 14900KF processor unfortunately died a few days after the last BIOS update.
He worked for four months. Quite a lot, considering that the previous one lasted only a month.
