  • unexpected exception...again!

    Well, this error has returned!

Background: we are rendering an animation of a huge business park. All our machines are Dual Xeon 3GHz with 2GB RAM. When using backburner to render frames from a saved solution, we get sporadic failed renders from all the machines - say every 5th render or so.

Solution: disable HT and it all works flawlessly.

Now I have just built a test AMD X2 render machine as we are thinking of purchasing a few. First test renders are fine and very (very) quick! Nice.

We have just added this machine to the aforementioned large business park animation job and, low and behold, I have just had the exact same error message. Its only happened once so far (and it has only rendered about 4 or 5 frames) so it *could* be a one off. However, I am suspicious.

Now I know that the X2s don't use HT, but they are dual core and maybe using similar processes. Therefore I obviously can't turn off HT. Is there anything similar that vray has an equal problem with? Put it this way: if Vray has the same problems rendering large complex scenes with an AMD X2 as it does with (some) systems that have Hyperthreading enabled, there are going to be some very angry people.

The nature of this project is such that we will not be able to email it to support. It is around 100MB in size with countless textures and large saved Irmaps etc. This cannot be a memory problem as some frames render, others do not.

Anyone else share this? Doubtful I know as the X2s haven't been out all that long. Our problem is we are about to make a large investment in these X2 machines so we need to know beforehand if there is a solution similar to disabling hyperthreading on some dual Xeon machines.
    Kind Regards,

well i would be interested to see if it continues to happen the every 4-5 frames. So let us know how it goes. We get alot of exceptions here as well, and we use intels with HT on.

Is the new machine a dual one (e.g. 4 rendering threads)? Also, which V-Ray version is that? We have a newer build which may work fine in the dual-HT case.

It is definately happening every 3rd, 4th or 5th frame! Bloody typical.

Vlado - its a single processor (a 4400+ X2) in a Shuttle SN25P machine. 2 GB crucial value memory. This effectively means it renders in Vray with 2 buckets. Vray version 1.47.03. Max 7.1.

PLEEEEASE tell me you have a newer build that will solve this???

I'm not sure... there was a problem that was fixed, but I don't know if it is causing your problems. In any case, you can email me to vlado@chaosgroup.com (if you have a vraylog.txt file from a crashed machine, that would help too).

            Best regards,

no, not yet. Frankly I would need to do some tests. Which is faster? Having HT on and having a crash every 5-10 frames, or turning it off and slowing your overall rendertime down?

Sometimes I can send out a job and have no crashes whatsoever, or maybe just a few over say a 1000 frames. So turning it off for all future jobs would probably be ill advised in our situation. Its usually more of a memory issue IMO. The closer it gets to its memory limit the more likelihood of exceptions.

Im just waiting for 64bit max/vray.

In our case it has been far far far quicker to just turn off HT. To be able to send animation jobs and have no errors is such a good feeling!

Generally speaking I have HT on for my workstation.

                  Tricky.
FYI Vlado was refering to your Pentium machine with HT not your X2 shuttle.
He wanted to know if your pentium machine was a dual xeon with HT or a single xeon/p4 with HT.

Just thought i would clear that up

Tricky I have the same problem always and always with huge scene on dual xeon with ht on, with monoprocessor no pbl/no crash but big time, Percy is right you must disable HT on your machine that's the issue.

But please Vlado try to fix it, you know that this is one of the biggest problem in Vray(memory issue) in big scene.
Vray is awesome but this "bug" make people crazy about it!!

PS: Tricky, never sleep is the second issue.
                    =:-/

Well, there are two main possible reasons for this:
                      1. There is indeed a bug in V-Ray
                      2. You are running out of RAM with 4 threads, but not with 2 threads. This may be caused by the fact that four threads take a little more memory than two threads. This may be enough to overflow the available RAM, if you are just on the edge.

I am not sure which of the two is the actual reason for your problems - which is why I asked for a vraylog.txt file.

                      Best regards,
                      Vlado
