I was happily working, and a fireplace wall turned into 100 reflective. It didn't matter what material I put on it; it was a mirror. I reset the render engine and rebooted MAX, and you got it, 100% reflective. I exported it as an FBX and returned it to MAX, but it was a no-go. I tried to remove the UVW and Material, but the script failed. Exporting it as a 3DS and importing it worked, but what a waste of an hour of my life. What would cause this?

Can you post the geo/shader? Would be interesting to look at and tinker with

Yeah, it's difficult to say what's happening without the scene. Could you attach a simplified version here or send it via the contact form?

I had to keep moving, so I didn't have time to save the broken scene. I might be able to recover it from my recycle bin.

The FBX didn't work, but the 3DS did. I want to remind you that this is an ArchiCAD model.

For me it doesn't render at all. That's the fbx.
Scanline/Arnold is no problem, so I guess it's a Vray thing somehow, like it just doesn't see it. Very odd.

Yeah, at some point it stopped rendering for me too.

The whole day was a mess. My laptop's external speaker (Dell Speakerphone) and my main PC's UPS stopped working, too. I am lucky I didn't leave the house; I would have gotten ran over by a bus.

                  lol...what a day

That geometry is really strange. I hope someone has a reason for why it won't work properly.

I managed to get it to 'be seen' but it seems Vray can calculate the reflections/refractions/GI/Caustics....everything, though seemingly the diffuse is completely ignored, whether a colour or a map.

Create a box and convert it to editable poly then attach the wall to it , that would fix it .
You can use this script to save few clicks too ( use the "Box Trick" button ) :

Simply, I love to put pixels together! Sounds easy right : ))

Your object has "Matte object" enabled in "V-Ray properties>Matte properties", so your object is not rendering.

Reset these values to default and everything will be fine:

I have no clue how that could have happened, but thanks for checking it out. Would that have caused it to render 100% reflective before it stopped rendering at all?

Since, in the screenshot, it is set to be a matte for reflection and refraction, then yes.

You accidentally clicked the "create V-Ray shadow catcher" button in the toolbar.
What I did not know is that FBX writes those properties to the exported file.
Also I like to solutions to this user error: Export as .3ds, attach to box etc.
