  • Bump/Adaptive QMC - static noise problem?

    Hello all,

    has any one had a problem with "static noise" in glossy surfaces with bump maps?

    the particlular problem i'm having is that specific surfaces have a "world coordinate" type noise when rendered. There is NO world coordinate noise in the surfaces. I've cranked up the Adapative QMC samples and turned OFF time indepentant check box?

    any other ideas?

    for adaptive qmc it's also necessary to touch up the threshold in the QMC Sampler rollut, for the higher subdivs to actually take place.
    Set it to something like 0.001 and see if it gets better.

      yeah....

      by "cranking" it up i meant that i had the Noise threshold at .002 i'll try higher. (or smaller)

          Small QT movie

            hmmm at the res its too hard to see whats going on.

            Are you using procedural noise as the bump?

              mostly painted noise but there is a cellular noise in there breaking stuff up a bit. but i checked and it is set to object XYZ not world XYZ.

              I know its hard to see but if you "blurr your eyes" and look at the right hand side of the image you'll see a the static noise there.

                  So where exactly is teh noise... lower left or lower right.. (you have said both) or is it all over the image.
                  Its hard to tell in that pic.. alot of it looks like compression
                  Basically that little mov is too small and too compressed to really see whats going on.

                  Also 78kb is hardly going to break your bandwidth hehehehe

                  I suggest you post a higher res less compressed render for us to have a look at

                    will do.... sorry about the left right thing... a bit tired. its on the right hand side.

                    i'll post a larger version tomrrow. and its reflecting a HDR, and some regular Vray lights.

                    I'm testing now with the default overide, and i'm pretty sure its something in the shader. other parts on the object that don't have any bump, do not have this problem.

                      if your using procedural bump it will not move when the object moves unless you lock it down.

                      Try rendering out a bitmap of just the bump and applying that to see if it helps.

                        thanks for the help everyone.... I figured it out.

                        And it wasn't Vray at all. We're using Point Oven to import animation from Maya to Max. There is a procedural texture on the bump channel. It was acting like world coordinates because the points of the were being displaced on a local point level....and i don't know if there is a feature to force the bump to "AFTER" the displacement.

                        anyway i'm baking out the procedural and all is good. Thanks for the help.
