  • Glossy reflections, noise, and animation

What is the best way to get rid of flickering on a glossy object in an animation? Is the secret in the material, in the LC/IRMAP calculations, or in the QMC settings? I have a gold material that has a lot of flickering going on!

can you show your material setup and scene settings? it might make it easier to solve

Put up your glossy samples for starters to 16 or 24.

          Second that !
That means the subdivisions of the mat for reflections.

After changing these subdivisions, do I have to redo the LC and IRMAP calculations before rendering....or does this only affect the image at render time?

You can use the old, but I recommend you go with a fresh new.

Going up to 16 subdivisions made little difference in the noise....but made render times longer. Anything else I can do? Now that 1.5 can do IRMAP calculation with animations in DR, is it still recommended to use just one machine for the calcultion? I seem to have alot of over-all graininess compared to other animations I have seen. What should I change to take care of that?

yes, what type of AA are you using? Your screenshot is missing it. And I'll ALWAYS probably use one machine to create an irradiance map. Ill never trust it to multiple machines.

Maybe I'm confused, but isn't the AA the Adaptive QMC which I included? Maybe Im just lost....lots of deadlines now!!!

oops your right Im not used to the new version rollout, having not started using 1.5 yet. Anyone know if .85, .005 is acceptable qmc settings to be used with adaptive qmc? I remember reading that it doesn't have to be .001 anymore. Try a test with global subdivisions higher? say 5.0 or something?

Any chance of posting 2 cropped frames which have flickers between so we can see the kind you mean?

Placing one image on the other in photoshop you can see the flicker.

is there a procedural noise in the gold material?

No...should procedual noise be avoided in animations....or there a special way to deal with them?
