  • New licensing system is broken?

    Hi,

Why doesn't vlrservice start in startup? Is it because windows services are started BEFORE dongle drivers are initialized?

Sometimes dongles just disappear after a reboot. You need to detach and attach dongle before vlrservice realizes you have dongle (this could be windows related problem too).

When user starts another copy of 3dsmax that uses vray too, the server dies. If you try to restart the service it crashes every time. You need to detach the dongle and attach it again and then start the service. Why (the hell)?

Why does user need to run vlrservice or vlrserver in order to have functioning license when user has dongle attached to computer? Sure it's for sharing the license over network but what if there are no other users?

Opinion: Hardware locks and any other kind of copyright "protections" are useless. They only cause problems to the ones that have really purchased the software. People who download it from p2p don't have these kind of problems.

You still have the old software license in place; on 32-bit Windows, once the license key is entered, you do not need either the vrlserver or the vrlservice if you are going to use your license locally. In newer builds, this is carried over to 64-bit Windows as well.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

i have absolutely no idea what he is on about. Ive had the dongles since siggy last year and i havent noticed a single thing wrong with it and i dont have to run anything manually. when the computer boots the dongle is recognised by it then when the computer runs the liscnce manager all is fine. but hey. there are always 1 or 2 disgruntled customers out there (out of the thousands of customers)

I have to agree with Da_elf, I've had two dongles running on two different computers since Siggi and have had no problems. Perhaps renni, your computer is crap?

Ive never had any luck with them. As crap as my computer may be, I dont think a new licensing system warrants me spending more money on it.

No I don't have old license in place.

"if it works for me it works for everyone". Typical thinking. There are also thousands of pc configurations.

                    From windows event log:
                    Description:
The VRLService service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Trying to start the server manually leads to exact same error message. You need to detach the dongle and attach it again. Then it will work.

This workstation has also XSI license dongle (iButton) and digital fusion license dongle (can't remember by who) that work great.

Never. Unless you send DHL to fetch it/them for you.

We recieved ours a few weeks ago. havent gotten around to switch to dongles tho, as dont wanna do it during hi-pressure deadline times.

I myself am pushing hard for both systems to be supported, but (unfortunately or not) the final word is not by me.

So there indeed appears to be an issue with the vrlservice starting automatically, if the Windows starting process itself takes some more time. We are working on resolving this.

                          Best regards,

ao yo umean that if you have a crappy computer and for some reason your vrlserver takes a while before starting....i keep my liscence next to my keyboard on a USB extension so i could unplug and replug it if the server missed it (which hasnt happened)

Well, it happens on my machine, and I would like to think that it is not that crappy yet
