I have always had trouble with certain materials. I am trying to map in a blue stone gravel driveway and it always tile horribly. Are there any tips or tricks that you guys use to create such materials?
usually to remove tiling effect, you need to mix several maps with a procedural map.
What you can try is mix two tilied textures, with a procedural noise map to blend them. Or, you may try a more advanced approach where you can use falloff map to specify camera disatanec and use the falloff map to blend between less tiled map at far and more tiled map at close up, thur redusing tiling effect. Such method is used in games, like half life 2 for example. However if you are using displacement this may not work.

Great....YOu see....I have never really had a chance to do some of the more "detailed" stuff, due to just nat having the time to learn some things.....I usually just blended everything in PS later on.....I know I am gonna regret this ......What is detailed mapping a term or are you making fun??
Eric, I find that vray displacement sometimes works great to hide tiling. Also gives a good roughness to something like gravel. At the expense of render time though.

I agree with powerandrubber. 2d Displacement with a crisp noise map (high/low thresh. about 0.6/0.4) or maybe a cellular map, can provide a quite convincing gravel texture. And to further enhance the gravel realism I sometimes add a physical noise modifier to the gravel geometry.
