  • Summed area not working well with VRay material

This is very strange. I have a fence that has a fence texture attached as diffuce and opacity map (VRay material). Maps are instaced and have summer area filtering on.

When I open the max file and render, texture is very blurred. When I open the material in material editor and render, then it renders fine as it should, sharp along the fence.

Problem is related to VRay material because it renders fine with MAX standard material. Seems like the summed area filtering needs to be activated in material editor until VRay recognizes it in rendering.

I quess you can reproduce this with any 32 bit texture and just use VRay default settings with default lights.

Here is the scene and sample images. Just open it and render and then open material editor and render. You can see clear difference in texture filtering.

This affects network rendering because all the fences now become blurred. So I need to switch back to MAX standard materials?

      Which 3dsmax/V-Ray version is this?

For opacities its best to turn off filtering and set the blur to 0.001. That way it will definitly work fine.

          MAX9 and VRay 1.50RC3

Turning opacity map filtering off and blur to 0.001 affects only opacity map and doesn't solve filtering problems on the non-transparent parts of the texture.

try the same on the diffuse maps as well.

Well that works as a workaround. The original problem seems like a bug in VRay?

I am not really getting this error with max 9 and my latest internal build of V-Ray; I'll try the RC3 now.

It does happen with RC3 though; so I suppose it is fixed already. If you wish, you can email me for an update.
