Check that your model is not too far away from 0,0 point. If any part of your model is like 2000000 units from 0,0 you'll have this problem.
When importing spllines from CAD i always apply an edit-spline modifier which in effect resets the splines's bounding box.
View your model in box mode and that'll tell if you have any of these problems.
BTW I had simmilar problems with sketch-up as well

Another thing. I aggree that MAX is waaaaaay overpriced.

              Hope this helps

Hi there, realise this is an old thread....

I've had this problem loads. I'm pretty sure it's a unit's problem. If you always work in metres and convert any units of incoming CAD files upon importing, you'll be fine. I think it links in the with 'resulting accuracy' problem max has always had. Which is why 'user' view displays everything fine and 'perspective/camera' views look weird. If you zoom right out it should also look ok.

I have always found Max's shaded view port crappy when compared to lightwave, Maya or any of the other packages.

                    Thats just me though.
