Ok, I have tried some new things and now I have some new questions. I am still using the .255 method and gamma 2.2 in both vray and max. I was changing my shutter speed to expose my scene, but now realize that the tutorials on the .255 method used the ISO to expose. Now my vraysky is way dark. I tried increasing the sky output via output map and vraysky intensity, but nothing seems to happen to the sky. I have effect background checked.... I also noticed that when I have the vraysky in the max environment and the vray environment override I get a whole different effect... way to bright. What am I missing?

what do u mean " I am still using the .255 method and gamma 2.2 in both vray and max" ?
I mean one is enough. r u sure u r not double-correcting gamma?
maybe is better to understand if u send image and screenshot of ur max preferences and vray colormaping.

Screen Shot
This job has come back to me for color study and I have a little time so I thought I would play with techniques. The way I was doing it was getting me good results, but probably not accurate results. Here is some assembled screen shots with my settings.
I'll be glued to the screen in anticipation for replies.Bobby Parker

exposing with iso is the same as exposing with shutter speed
These settings will produce the same results
fstop-8
shutterspeed - 1/100th s
iso-400
fstop-8
shutterspeed - 1/50th s
iso-200
by halving the ISO you are effectively doubling the shutter speed.
Clearly it's not a problem with _how_ you are exposing.Colin Senner

In your output for your bitmaps and whatnot, I didn't think you had to use a .255 method if you were globally adjusting the input bitmaps through the GAMMA/lut screen because you are effectively doing it globally. You might try changing that back to 1 and show us a render. Am I wrong?

When using LWF I do not use gamma 2.2 in the Vray settings AS WELL as in the max settings. I think you are double exposing your scene which is why you have the blow outs. As for the background being too dark, I believe Vlado said it is currently too dark which will be corrected soon.
Are you using the Vray FB with the sRGB button enabled?

LWF and GAMMA
I just merged my model into the given gargoyle scene and ran it... it looks very nice. Both gamma in MAX and V-ray are set to 2.2 also. All the settings seem to be the same as my posted example, except the ISO in the gargoyle scene is lower which I already new. I just moved the v-ray/sun from directly above to the lower right so well see what happens. I'll post my results.
I have no way of knowing if the gargoyle scene's max gamma was set to 2.2. Does anybody know?Bobby Parker

vray sky
I did some testing last night and I couldn't reproduce that scenario. I think my scene was just screwed up. I am now using the gargoyle scene and it seems much more manageable. I moved the v-ray sun and now am trying to match an RGB. I'll let you know how it goes.Bobby Parker

I am using the latest beta build (I think) so the 2x sun shouldn't be involved here. V-Ray Adv 1.5 RC4Bobby Parker

The gargoyle scene is set with linear color mapping (1,1,2.2), not reinhard.
Also, the bits you show as "almost spot on" are likely to be darker because of the tree shadow.
Try and hide the tree casting the shadow on the house, and expose it without.
Turn it back on for the final render, see if that helps.
Only RC5 has the new sun and sky, afaik.Lele

Sun/Sky
Yes, I noticed it is set to linear. After running some tests I don't find a need for the reinhard. I did turn the trees off to calculate my ISO. I am thinking my issue was the actua MAX file because everything seems to be working out now since I am using your scene.Bobby Parker
