  • Environment mapping and DOF

    Hi,

it's a Vray for Rhino problem, but maybe it's a general Vray problem. I miss this feature and so I hope, if post the problem here too, the fix need less time.

If I use the environment mapping for the ground and enable DOF, than I should get a typical DOF effect based on the geometry, but here, the env mapped ground is extrem blurred only. It seems to be, the DOF calculation base on a size of an internal used env sphere. If I disable DOF (no phys cam), than anything looks fine.

Resolution of the environmentmap? is bitmap filtering off ?

Filterung off. Image size 7500x3750. Rendering without DOF enabled looks perfect sharp.

        i dont get it...
u mean u have a map in the environment, and the dof is wrong?
for me its spot on...no bug if understood u correctly!
try and put a texture into a plane for the ground instead

The groundplane is a diffuse material with a high res 360° env texture in environment projection mode. The simpliest way to render an object in a virtual environment - environment mapping.

... here an example from a current experiment - WIP only. For example, my wish is, that I could enable DOF and focus to the car.

it s a bitmap projected as an enviroment...
the ground has no geometry, right?

As a temp fix maybe you could blur the hdri manually to give an 'impression' of dof, and render the plane in a seperate pass as the frog.

But this doesnt really solve your problem as such....

                  Thanks for the workaround hint.

Maybe somebody like to test 3dsmax about this issue. It's quite simple and a high res image can be found at the above flickr.com link.

I will give it a shot in a bit.

im curious to see if it works.

Seems to happen on the max version as well. Setting the mapping for the bitmap to spherical environment and it blurs evenly across the whole map.

I assume its because vray sees it mapped as an enviroment and then blurs it as if it were at the furthest point away.

                        Test images.

                            No problem

I wonder if its possible to get DOF to work properly ..

Why are you setting it as a spherical environment ? I guess that simply cannot work as an environment is far away = blurred. Why not camera-map it ?
