  • IES Rendering Slowdowns

Is there any particular reason why IES files cause major slowdowns in rendering?

I guess the same holds true for Maxwell and Fryrender - not trying to compare these rendering engines but I'm just pointing out that other software seems to experience the same issues.

Is there any way around these slowdowns (aside from not using IES files at all)?

IES lights in max suck, afaik they are comprised of 100's of point lights so i guess the produce a lot of rays to trace. I thought that we'd be getting ies web support for the vray light like being developed in V-Ray for Maya. Then the cutoff could be utilized to speed them up.

There is nothing so terribly slow about implementing IES lights in principle; I'm not sure why they would be so slow in 3ds Max - our implementation in Maya seems to be not too slow... we can just port this over to 3ds Max, I guess.

        Best regards,
        Vlado

          YES Vlado, please do that!

I recently had to change all my IES lights to spot+projector map, because in animation it was so painfully slow that it wasn't even worth it..
I love IES as they are very nice and lifelike in interiors, but the render times with lots of them is tragic....

          cheers!

just thought I would throw my hat in this one!!!

It would be a great add with reduced rendering times for all my architectural images.....

                  just so painfully slow now......

                      Another vote here.

We use IES maps in stills but with animatons you have to use IES only for key areas and VRAY lights everywhere else or your render times go through the roof.

I dont expect anything extra to be added. I would expect a service pack to fix bugs for free. But new features, or upgrades to additional features I would be Happy if there were included in a SP, but not expect them to be.

Thats all i meant by it. I would be nice to have, but I would not expect it to be.

lol. All I was focusing on was your mention of "Vray 2.0" If 1.0 to 1.5 took a little while, I can't imagine waiting until 2.0...

                          1.5 SP1 for the win!!!

Someone corrected me as I don't use this software, but I gather Fry and Maxwell don't utilize IES lights.

As I understand it, Maxwell can use IES files, but when working in Maxwell you have to use Maxwell Materials, Maxwell Lights, Maxwell Cameras, etc. You can't use the built-in 3DSMax equivalents.
