  • New comp, new max/vray versions, consistant crash

I just got a new q6700 with 4 gigs of ram. Its a great upgrade but I have a scene that is constantly crashing. I don't think the ram limit is close. I don't know if this is vray related or max or vista. I am rendering out at 3k and even when I do a region render it crashes. I should say its crashing 3 out of 4 times because I have been able to save the image. No problems with the prepass, I have switched from irr map/lc - irr map/brute force nd no change.

Is there a way I can trouble shoot to know if its a vray issue, OS/comp issue or max issue?

I have merged the scene, disabled the max render window, the odd thing was the last time I rendered and it crashed I had only changed the AA filter from quadratic (which worked) to Catmull which crashed. I have not tested this enough I dont know if there is a relationship or not. I am rendering now to see if I can render with AA filtering off.

    I am on vista 64, max 2008 & vray 1.5 sp1

WindowsXP 64-bit or 32-bit? We've been having crashes with 64-bit xp, and some of my problems have gone away by using 32-bit max 2008 instead of the 64-bit version.

Some other things I might try:
    - Changing your Display driver in Max to OpenGL (just to see if it renders/navigates)
    - Making sure your video card drivers are up-to-date and stable
    - Disabling a secondary monitor if you have one active and try, (we've had problems spanning an image from the MaxFB/VRFB across both monitors)

I am only having problems with that scene and it seems to be only if I use Catmull in that scene. Again I have not tested it enough to have consistent crash that would make me confident its that filter. I am able to walk away from that scene and I hope I don't have that issue again.

I am hating Vista. For a machine that is only days old I have had a bit of issues. And I guess this is a max 2008 issue but when I go to save an image I often click once over an older version say"draft march10" and change the 10 - 11 so I don't have to retype but even changing the name I get a write over warning. That is minor. I do see a bug in max where sometimes if I select and try to move with the mouse any element in a poly it gets moved in a random way all over the screen I have to use the coords down at the bottom to move it correctly.

This machine is silent though. My last one was so loud. Anyway...

This happens in XP too, well at least XP64 for sure.
