  • VRAY CRASH: Building raycast accelerator

This is a problem we encounter very frequently and seriously it piss me off!

The problem seem to be caused by a corrupted geometry but I can't tell when it got corrupted. The problem IS NOT CAUSED by a lack of memory(sue at 99%): I already rendered scene with about 20 milions of poly without problems and some scenes with 100 000 polys make me sick. I have a dual Quad with 4Gb RAM, win Xp 64bits, max 9 sp2 and vray 1.5

Like you can see in the picture, one of the doors is corrupted(or all!). All of them can be rendered alone WITHOUT the wall or ONE of them WITH the wall. The rendre crash in the BUILDING RAYCAST ACCELERATOR pass.

So the duplicated door make an interraction with the wall who made VRAY crash?! I tried instanced and copy, no diffference. Sometimes, it's also just a single object.

We have this problem very often, maybe with 50% of our scene. It's very time consuming and frustrating for all the team.

any help will be very appreciated and any problem resolution will be venerate!

If you can send me the scene that crashes to vlado@chaosgroup.com I will be able to tell you more about the problem; without the scene it's hard to say whay may be wrong.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

      hmm

Hey, this happend to me also a few month ago.

      @vlado:
guess what, would it be possible to programm an alert box or something like that, if you reach a limit of ram in your scene file ?

I mean, before it crashes because of some RAM issues, that Vray will tell you before:
Hey, look at your RAM before you try to render, and see, you reached with your system already a limit....

so you can adjust the scene file with proxies....
      hmmm.... well, just an idea...

      thx,

There's a semi-hidden BSP mode which uses heuristics to optimise the usage of the BSP.
Also the "Auto" mode for BSP already transfers to "proxy" objects (Dynamic geometry, to be precise) with lots of polygons and/or many instances in the scene.
You could overfill RAM with odd BSP settings and not too many polygons.
I guess that to know the exact ram usage you may only have to actually perform the BSP.

fine, but in my case, the problem is not related to ram. Look at my image. Its a very simple scene with a wall in edit poly and a very basic door with frame and its crash. It's can't be memory.

Yes, i was replying to Bernhard.
Post a stripped down scene, or mail it to Vlado, and we/he'll discover what the issue is.

                Hello Louis,

Can you tell me which V-Ray version you are using? There was a bug when rendering renderable splines, which I see are present in your scene. This bug is corrected in the official V-Ray 1.5 SP1 on our site.

                Best regards,
                Vlado
