  • strange displacement

    hi there

i've some trouble with a displacement map causing some strange 'shifting' patterns. before i loose any words, please take a look at the rendering.
as you can clearly see, there is some strange thing going on.
the disp-map is always the same (some copy/paste withing the texture itself to make it larger). this should'nt happen, because the map got a alpha channel with sharp edges/cutouts (no smoothing or the like).
btw. the disp-map is 32Bits. no texture-map filter is applied within the vraydisp-modifier. the resolution is set accordingly to the displacement map. Precision is set to 8 (default i think). i'm on Max 9.0 64bit and vray R1.5 SP1
could someone please help me out with this, it's really urgent (what's not).
    thanks
    ale

Are you using 3d or 2d displacement? In the first case, try decreasing the edge length, and in the second - increasing the resolution for the displacement.

    Best regards,

      hi vlado

      i'm using 2D displacement.
jep, i was already increasing the map-size.

      thanks.

Have you tried to disable the MAX texture filtering?

Edit: yeah you already did ^^

Shrink your opacity map by 1px, so it cuts into the mesh a little more. Either that or smooth the black section out in your displacement map so it doesnt cut straight to black.

            thanks guys

to Codi: i rarely use max-filtering, i mostly set it to none.

to cubiclegangster: the opacity map already was 1 pixel 'smaller', thanks anyway.

              Hi Ale,

Have you tried setting the bitmap map Blur value to the smallest possible value (0.01)? This also causes some irradic behaviour in my displacement maps from time to time.

This looks like a "view dependant" issue. Try with it off and define the edge length in scene units.

                  thanks again guys.
it seems i'got it solved somehow. sure the map-size did matter alot.
i will consider your tips for further tests.

                  have a nice evening.
                  ale
