  • Thicker glass base cannot be seen ! ?

    Hi there,

I have been trying for 2 days now to work out how to render the thicker base of the glass container I am visualising.

I have a container, that has a much thicker distance at the bottom than at the top. The container is shelled (meaning, I made sure it wasnt just one set of faces). Then I created the liquid mesh that is slightly larger than the inner faces of the container.

When I render, the thickness of the base is only very slightly visible. Whereas, something like Vlados milk renders, where there is a thick base on those glasses, are visible ? The client needs to be able to see the thicker base of the glass.

I do have fog on the glass and the liquid. Im pretty sure the IOR's are ok.

    Anyone have any ideas ?

      glass is 1.517

      liquid is 1.32

Both have max depth set to 10

The only way Ive managed to get it to render the thicker section is to reduce the liquid mesh inside the container inner faces, but I know this is incorrect.

Hm, what if you make the fog color of the glass darker? I'm not sure there is anything wrong here actually, just the shape of the glass is such that it's thickness is not so obvious (like when you look through the thick glass of a large aquarium - you don't really notice the thickness of the glass unless you happen to look at its edge).

        Best regards,

If I make the fog darker, the entire glass container goes dark, almost completly opaque on the lower section with the liquid in.

I could understand that about the aquarium glass, but I have the camera far away and zoomed right in to create almost no perspective. Basically you are looking right at the glass, not from a high or low angle.

Im thinking the fog bias could come into play here, but no matter what I adjust it to, small -/+ values, or extremly large -/+ values it seems to come out really dark.

Ok; in that case if you wish you can send that part of the scene to vray@chaosgroup.com and we'll take a look at what's going on.

            Best regards,

Can i confirm with some of the more experienced users of Vray that when you create a liquid within a glass, the liquid mesh should be slightly larger than the inner surface of the container.
