      I've the same identical problem, but i think i found a solution. Try to click on "setvrlservice.exe" C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\V-Ray\3dsmax 2009 for x64

and change localhost with the name of your computer (mine Xeon).

Is there any fix for this yet? Too frustrating, time consuming, awful...thanks

We are working on a fix for this, but it needs some more testing before being useable. If this is a serious problem for your workflow, you can email me to vlado@chaosgroup.com and we'll try to set you up with a temporary solution.

          Best regards,

I have two work stations, one is unaffected thankfully but the other has this problem. At first I thought it was 3D Studio but it only happens when Vray is the primary render engine. Both machines are on gigabit networks going through the same switches and servers, all the dongles are pluged into the same server and both of my computers have to travel the same network path in order to access them. I HATE this bug, it can take up to several minutes for all the materials to appear, and editing them is equally slow.

For whatever reason when I updated my Quadro drivers I got the dreaded slow material editor. I did a system restore and went back to the way my computer was when I knew the material editor wasn't slow and it worked fine. Then I reinstalled the new Quadro drivers again and the material editor got slow again. Is it the drivers? Somehow I doubt it, but looking into the possible causes with the Vray license manager, since I run the manager as a service I went to stop the service and got "VRLservice.exe: Start Error - error 128 is occurred!" So I hit stop again, then restarted it and now the material editor works fine. I've rebooted and it still works fine. I really don't know if this helps anyone and like I said I doubt the video drivers had anything to do with it....but I've got my fast Material Editor back .

                  Hi,

We resolved this problem by typing in the primary licence server with the windows name (not ip) and leave the alternates blank. and connection ports to default (30304)

                  hope this helps

Same problem here, veeery slow material editor when working with vray materials and a 2-3 sec delay when opening render scene dialog. Running 3dsmax2008 (quadro performance driver). Really annoying!

Restart the Vray license server...fixes it for me. You don't even need to restart max.

Turning off my "Trend micro internet security 2009" ( or adjusting the firewall settings to "low") almost halved the load time of the material editor. Don't know if this is the case for other firewall softwares...?

BTW: Restarting the license server doesn't do much for me... Anyway I have no idea how fast the material editor should work. It seems slow even with standard materials. Could there be a problem with 3dsmax2008. Autodesk haven't released a service pack for this version which make think they don't care about it or the upgrade from the previous version was next to nothing...

I'm having huge problems with this material editor as well. I'm going to try changing the Lic. Server settings, but Vista is preventing me (user controls). I might have to go with Scanline render previews...

...it's okay now. Deleted entries for VRay License server, restarted, re-entered server info (but this time I didn't use the server name), restarted again and material editor is fast again!

                              Hi

I also had this problem a few times.
Since I have loaded updates and service packs for Max Design 2009, I do not have the problem anymore.
Vray material editor is set as my default.
I have also installed all the latest Max 2009 extensions.

Update ur max and see if problem is solved.
Think there were quite a few bugs in initial max release
