Since I got no replies in my old thread, I have to open a new one.

So, I'm using vrayfur for grass on my exterior scenes. I have 2 Opterons 275 (4 cores) and 4 GB of RAM.

    1) what's the best memory setting for me? It's on auto setting, but should I change it from 400MB?

    2) Maybe it's better to use two vrayfurs on the same emitter object, so that the emitter doesn't have to have so many subdivisions? If yes, I think vrayfur should have seed option, because this way, two emitters will generate grass leaves on the same spot - no effect.

    3) Can the engine be adjusted so that it doesn't matter how many faces the emitter has? Only per face works for large areas, per area is unusably slow. So I make a plane with a lot of subdivisions and then boolean out the road and other stuff. It would be much easier to make a spline and extrude that shape, but then I don't have equal pattern of faces, so per face makes uneven grass generation. If I could use per area, this would be great.

    Hope everything makes sense.

    Please help, and advise

    thx

hmm why dont u use displacement for lawns - mutch faster and not that memory hungry, or use build in hair of max, tweak and convert into mesh - then proxy it... i recommend first one... i have issue with vray fur for big terrains, and displace is the fastest, easy to set up and controll way.. hope thats help..

If u sitll wants to run through vrayfur, so u must put memory as high as possible, 400MB will be verry low....
can u post some renders how big is the terrain for grass, and your render settings.

Yes, I know about alternatives. I don't like displacement when it's close to the camera, and MAX hair loads entire mesh when you're rendering, and it's a shopping mall scene, a lot of large grass areas.
Like I said, it's ok now, I render GI with vrayfur hidden, and then the real render renders pretty fast. I'll upload my scene when I'm done. It's pretty cool now. But still I want to know the answers to those questions because on my tests, if I put memory too high, like 4000MB my hdd is working all the time which is actually slowing everything down. So I want to know the pro setting for it - the way chaos guys meant for it to be used.

      thx for the advices though

probably because everybody is telling you how they would do it, but you still want to do it your way. Just tweak your displacment settings or use a different map. Furthermore it will help if you post some renders so we can see what you are talking about.
          Kind Regards,

My questions 1, 2, and 3 are not related to a particular render but the vrayfur in general, and about vray in general. So, that's not the reason - my using that technique.

My experience is that VrayFur is useless for larger areas of grass. Tried it many, many times. Unusable even on a 10x10m area considering a relatively realistic grass density.

I, too, recommend using displacement, and enhance it with some scattered geometry on top. Works quite fast and well.

              Best regards,
              A.

It works, I have a huge area. But, you must keep your per face around 100 - 150 and increase density with emitter object having more faces. I use plane with a lot of faces and then boolean the areas that are roads, pavements etc. I think this could be an interesting topic and we could improve this technique, but we also need input from Chaos guys - Vlado? In few days I'll send you the final renders. My architects are delaying some changes so I don't want to double render.
