  • Crashes with SP3

I have problem with some of my scenes that have worked with SP2 and previous. It crashes constantly when the building light cache starts. I realized it worked on one of the scenes after deleting referenced FFDs, but not on another scene, might just be an coincidence. I have no clue what the problem is. Anybody had similar problems?

There were some reported crashes, but in any case it would be best if you can send me the crashing scene (or a part of it) to vlado@chaosgroup.com

    Best regards,
    Vlado

        Mats

I re-installed SP2 until they solve this issue.
It crashed in scens that were rendered in more than 1000 pixels.
        3ds Max 2016/2021 (Vray 6.x), Windows 10 64bit , AMD 2990WX ThreadRipper 32/64 Cores, 128 gigs RAM , 2X RTX3090 48GB RAM

Mine crashed in lower res as well. However after 8 hours of search and trials I found that if I uncheck all displacement maps, render, and then recheck the displacements, it worked. Also, if I made a simple global override mtrl, rendered, then went back to original materials it worked. So it seems to be something with the disp. maps, they need to be reloaded in sp3 or something...... Not a solution but a workaround until solved. If you also get similar results with this method it will help Vlado find what is wrong.

Are you using 32-bit versions of 3ds Max? I have not been able to reproduce the crash with Mats' scene (at least on my laptop) but the memory usage was quite close to the limit for 32-bit applications.

            Best regards,
            Vlado

Yes, your problem is a bit different though, and I think I know what it is.

                    Yes, 32-bit...
                    However, never crashed in SP2.
