  • Error rendering hair

I tried rendering Hair & Fur with Vray today. I got this error.
    Here is the scene file.

does it go away if you choose a different option other then mr prim? That one is for mentalray.

It is fine rendered through the buffer. But the vray docs say to change it to MR prim to render natively. Quoted from the docs......
To enable native rendering of the Hair&Fur modifier, select the mr prim option for the Hairs parameter of the Hair and Fur render effect:
I thought this was strange as well. Thanks for the reply though.

well it says in the manual that one should indeed choose mr prim as an option for vray to use.

I can't get hair and fur to even show up using mr prim. Nor have I ever. Am I missing something?

I have used it many times with MR, and it has always worked fine. But I would love to see it rendered in Vray.

Mabey I am missing a setting or two. I just tested this at home and still get the same error. Although it does still look damn nice rendered from the buffer.

No, still on 2009. I had heard it worked with 2010, but assumed the vray docs hadn't been updated so quickly to show that.

well its the code specific to 3ds max 2010, and as far as i understand it will not be supported for versions before that.

Yeah it only works in 2010 - the only reason there wasn't support for it earlier was because 3dsmax didn't expose it in the SDK or whatever before 2010.

Works fine for me (see attachment) for both 32- and 64-bit builds. Note that you need the release builds of 3ds Max 2010; it will not work with a beta or RC build.

                        Best regards,

Actually I got it to crash on a 4-core and an 8-core machine, but not on a dual one. The crash is somewhere in the hair code, so I'll be sending the scene for investigation (our test scenes render fine though).

                          Best regards,
                          Vlado

So further investigation showed that it only crashes in 3ds Max Design 2010; 3ds Max 2010 renders fine on all the machines.

Further on, it looks like a scene that is created in 3ds Max 2010, renders fine if loaded in 3ds Max Design 2010. However, scenes created in 3ds Max Design 2010 itself tend to crash.

                            Best regards,
                            Vlado

                              I don't understand,
will it be possible to use vray to render hair and fur?

                              Direct light, shadows, GI?

and if it's the case, how do I get the sp3a to try that ?
