  • Reinhard burn

Often when I have small windows I turn up the sun to light the room, and I always use Reinhard and reduce burn value to like 0.1, with the sun intensity of like 0,5 or less. Lol, I just realized, that this burn value is not really affecting the area that sun hits directly. Did I misinterpret the burn value? I use LWF so the room is pretty well light but still, I want better control of that burned area. How do you guys approach this?

Whats wrong with lowering the intensity of the sun, and leaving the sky as it is?

      ...straight from help file

"If the Burn value is 1.0, the result is linear color mapping and if the Burn value is 0.0, the result is exponential-style mapping."

I usually start with full linear to see what it should looks like (more or less) and only afterwards I begin (eventually) to tweak the burn value

I usually keep sun and sky "connected" so I only change one value.

I know that line from help file, but it just doesn't seam to work really. What do you guys use to unburn those areas where sun hits?

Do you have "don't affect colors" enabled in the color mapping rollout?

Yep, isn't that only for gama setting???

It also affects the multiplier and the burn value.

Lol, yep, just checked it! On SP2 and before it was aligned, visually, with gama so it got burned in my mind it's for gama
                Thanks, that was it!

NP, don't really know why it is like this, for me it would make more sense if it affected the gamma only

                    Why though?

You're complaining about the sun burning areas out and refusing to do the one thing that would fix it straight away, giving you incredibly fine control over exactly how bright it is.

It's like complaining your image is too noisy but you wont turn the AA above 1,2

It's easier and faster for me to just keep them linked. When I wasn't using LWF then I had sun separated from the sky because I needed ambiance to fill my rooms, now, I don't. I just reduce Reinhard burn value, and before that, when it didn't work, I reduced it with levels in PS, I always save in .exr

are you using phisycal camera or standard camera?

have you tried to tweak the clamping?

maybe the overexposed areas are way too big to allow the burn value to do its job

                        a.

Everything is ok now...like I said, I forgot, actually didn't know, that "don't affect color" affects burn and everything else. I thought it was only for gamma, and it was checked, that's why burn value did not take.
