  • Caustics with SpotLight

Hello. Just trying to get caustics from spotlight with inverse square falloff. Only with caustics multipler of 56000 I can barely see it.

    What I'm doing wrong ?

    Here's the scene. Max 2010. sp3a

So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

You have to set the "Start" parameter for the Inverse square decay to 1.0 generic units (not display units). Then you'll need to boost the light multiplier a lot, but it will work.

      I'm shocked

But, can be spotlight simulated with vray mesh light ?

Is this an appropriate thread for me to beg for a more intuitive and simple to set up caustics system ?

I struggle with it every time, and more often I just run out time or patience and give up. When it works it looks awesome, but I find it very hard to get consistent /predictable results.

That's because photon mapping is not really the best technique for this stuff, but until we implement other algorithms, there isn't much to be done.

Are there any plans in motion to implement other algorithms for the next V-Ray version? I think you once mentioned bidirectional path tracing as an option for caustics instead of photon mapping. Would be nice to have alternative options for caustics; they always make renders look more fascinating
