  • wibu-key - cannot obtain license - clean install of all

I did a clean install of Max 10 64-bit, installed VRAY sp4, and installed the wibu drivers. The wibu control panel shows me that my key is plugged in, but when I try to render I get a message that a license cannot be obtained. I have looked at other posts but they seem to have problems perhaps with upgrading. With a clean install, any idea what the problem may be? Thanks.

look at the wibu dongle itself. Is it lit up? If not, remove it and replug it in. I say this as I just reinstalled windows the other day and until I removed and replugged in the dongle, window's hadn't properly recognized it being attached.

Did you start the V-Ray license server?

      Best regards,

My dongle does not have a light on it (3 or 4 years old now) but I can see it in the WIBU control panel - it shows the serial number that is printed on the dongle, so I can tell that Windows is seeing it. I thought that the V-ray server always started itself up - I have never had to manually run it before. It seems to be running, but now I am unsure... How can I make sure the server is running?

There are two ways to make sure the license server is running; one is to check the Task Manager for a process named "vrlservice.exe" (make sure that the "Show processes from all users" option is enabled); the other is to open a web browser and type "http://127.0.0.1:30304" (without the quotes) as the address - you should see the license server web page.

If the license server is not running, you can run it manually from Start menu > Programs > Chaos Group > V-Ray for 3ds Max > Licensing > Launch V-Ray license server.

You can also register the license server to run automatically if you select Start menu > Programs > Chaos Group > V-Ray for 3ds Max > Licensing > Administration > Launch V-Ray license server (you may need to run this from an Administrator account).

The V-Ray installer also gives you the option to register the license server to run automatically.

          Best regards,
          Vlado
