I did a clean install of Max 10 64-bit, installed VRAY sp4, and installed the wibu drivers. The wibu control panel shows me that my key is plugged in, but when I try to render I get a message that a license cannot be obtained. I have looked at other posts but they seem to have problems perhaps with upgrading. With a clean install, any idea what the problem may be? Thanks.

My dongle does not have a light on it (3 or 4 years old now) but I can see it in the WIBU control panel - it shows the serial number that is printed on the dongle, so I can tell that Windows is seeing it. I thought that the V-ray server always started itself up - I have never had to manually run it before. It seems to be running, but now I am unsure... How can I make sure the server is running? You may as well be doing something while you're doing nothing.

If the license server is not running, you can run it manually from Start menu > Programs > Chaos Group > V-Ray for 3ds Max > Licensing > Launch V-Ray license server.
You can also register the license server to run automatically if you select Start menu > Programs > Chaos Group > V-Ray for 3ds Max > Licensing > Administration > Launch V-Ray license server (you may need to run this from an Administrator account).
The V-Ray installer also gives you the option to register the license server to run automatically.
