  • Displaced bricks - poor edge crispness

Trying to further my knowledge with vraydisplacement and am messing about with a brick wall. I have a BerconTileMap assigned as the displacement, and I have put a subdivide on the actual mesh itself to break it into approximatly 1500mm triangles.

When I render with these settings, I get quite a fuzzy edge to the bricks. What settings should improve this? I am messing around with edge length, but so far, nothing seems to smooth out these edges.

I've gone back to 2D displacement to see what I can do with that. Using the same BerconTile map, I now get the following problem. The individual bricks look nice and clean, but I get problems with large panels of bricks showing up:-

My resolution is 2048 ( I am rendering at 4kx4k pixels and this graphic is 1:1)

Not the prettiest mesh (file linked geometry)

          yuck!
I usually remodel any file linked mesh I displace.
Cuts out a lot of headaches!

So you think these problems are geometry problems? I wouldn't have thought so myself, but I'm wide open for correction.

I think it is geometry related.
              Give it a quick try.

I created a piece of geometry in Max and applied the same displacement to it and the problem seems to have reduced significantly. I think with a tweek of the settings, I could remove the problem.

Now my question is why are these problems happening? I can't start remodelling things in Max when they have already been modelled (accuratly, I might add) in Autocad. What does displacement not like about imported geometry? What can I do to make it so that Vray displacement likes this imported geometry? The geometry is modelled as solid objects in Autocad and it is all very clean.

(With this type of thing (a brick wall) would you use 3D or 2D displacement? I would have assumed 2D would suffice and use UVW mapping to ensure things line up. However, I still get the problems with panels of displacement like in my image earlier in this thread)

I don't really have much experience with displacement. Actually I try to avoid using it as often as possible. If I understood you right you have applied a subdivide modifier already. You could try to use lower settings for the subdivision that makes it easier for the displacement. Mostley this gives a much cleaner result. Still for some reason the vraydisplacement mod doesn't like imported geometry at all. Like I did never manage to get the "keep continuity" feature to work. I'm always getting holes inbetween edges.

It's pretty well explained in the help files as well: http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/150S...splacement.htm

                          cheers

For bricks i would always use 2d and i'd never use procedural displacement either. Always causes weird edges where the uvmap tiles.

Render the map out and try it as an image, see if that helps.
