  • Computing displacement - average 35% CPU usage!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi all,

I have an issue while computing displacement.
    ITS SOOOOOOO SLOW
so i ve checked my system and while computing, it only uses 35% of the CPU power on average.
    WHY?
i ve chcekd the afitities and priorities but max has full power in terms of those and so does vray

    using max2010 and vray SP4a

whats wrong co this is a bit ridiculous.

Thanks a lot for any input

    Bets Regards

have you tried raising the dynamic memory limit? default is 400 mb, which is too low in almost every case.

its not helping really.....the CPU usage is still around 30 %....

There are some parts of the displacement (e.g. the actual generation of the displaced geometry) that are not multi-threaded at present.

yes but i am getting huge ups and downs on cpu usage during actual rendering....which is strange...it should be on full throttle most of the time no? the highest i got was 82%, the lowest 15%, but most of the time it was fluctuating around 45% when the maxes priority was at REAL TIME

the memory was not used all the way at all so this could not be caused by swapping ....the maximum usage of RAM was around 5GB (MAX showed only 3.5 BTW)...i ve got 8GB in that particular machine.
Running vista 64 bit but will be crossing to win 7 soon

i have also noticed that by defaul my max starts with NORMAL priority and i have to manually set it to REAL TIME
is there any way how to set it to VERY HIGH by default?

            Hi,

I'm having the same problem (XP Pro, Twin Quadcores, 12G Ram, Max 2010, Vray 1.5 SP4).
I have a product shot scene with a bottle without any displacement.
Task Manager shows 3ds max using an average of around 35% and less than 2gig ram.
CPU usage doesn't go above 52% at any point.
I've altered the dyanmic memory settings in all directions and nothing changes.

I have other scenes like interiors/architectural that render on the same platform at 99% cpu.

Does anybody have any further thoughts on how to get the performance of my workstations into this scene?

            Many thanks,
            John

Just to reiterate...this is happening in my scene WITHOUT ANY DISPLACEMENT

              Thanks again

yeah this behaviour is very weird...and it drives me nuts
may ve Vlado might have any input on this?

Does your memory usage go beyond your physically installed memory amount? If it's hitting a certain amount beyond that the OS has to swap on the harddisk which is very slow...

You may be sure by uncheck the checkbox "displacement" in the global switches

There also might be some weirdness if you didnt clear unused materials in the mat slots - might be worth checking that.
Displacement calcs are one of my biggest pet peeves with the Vraymaterials website. People seem to load up the subs and have displacement checked whenever humanly possible...

Yes, it is always the same problem with the displacement... On my 24 core cpu (dual x5690, 24 gb ram...) when calculating lighthache just few cores are active other 0...
When render other scene (interiors or without displ.) 98-100% is using all cores
                        I have disabled bitmap pager

Is it possible to get me one such scene to vlado@chaosgroup.com so that we can look at possible ways to optimize it?

                          Best regards,

If you are using a Material with a map in the displacement slot then VRay will "override default displacement" by default, unless you turn it off.
