Since we can't reproduce it here, it will be very difficult to localize the problem. Maybe we can try to arrange a remote session and troubleshoot the issue further.
So you could contact us via our support mail at any time with request for assistance about this topic.

I have the exact same problem with crash when loading render presets. Did you find a solution for this? (Vray 2.50.01 on 3dsmax 2015)

Is "Compress files on save" option activated from the Preference Settings?
Does it crash on every scene or on empty scene?

It was random. I sorted it by writing a script to switch between my different settings
          Kind Regards,

"Compress files on save" is not on. Its random here as well. Sometimes it hangs max sometimes not.
As long as I remember to save before loading a preset I'm safe. But a script is smarter Thanks for the tip.

Ive experienced the same thing over the past couple months, if I use the 3dsmax render presets for V-Ray under the Common tab in the render settings I get random hang ups / freeses as well, on almost all my scenes. Ive even let it run over night to see if it would resolve but it never does, but like tehamnes said Ive gotten used to saving before I change my presets. One thing that also Ive been doing is using the presets under the V-Ray settings tab and have had no issues so far, which I find strange. Because of that I assumed it was a 3dsmax problem but I may be wrong.

              Windows 7 Pro, 3dsmax 2014 SP5 and V-Ray 3.00.08

Oh and I never have compress on save enabled...
              Cheers,
              -dave

Im experience constant crashing by just loading the presets via vray settings tab, also by changing the max subdivs on adaptive image sampler (only when i work for a while and then set the render parameters, it not happen when i just open the file and tweek the settings);and when using the slate material, right click, materials, vray...it just take a few seconds to show up the options to the diferent vraymat choices.
Im on 3dmax 2011x64 and vray 3.15.01_25196 nightly.
Not sure if its related but i have send my video card to repair its a GeForce GTX 650 TI Boost.
                Any hints?

This particular issue is fixed already in the nightly builds.
