Today my client ask me for a very high resolution. First I direct rendered 15000x11250 to the framebuffer, than I rendered a second version at 20000x15000 to vrimg. The vrimg file is 7,5GB and rendered per the old Vray version (VfR 1.05) and than I tried to load the vrimg per new VfR (1.5 based on Vray 2) to the framebuffer. Now, 4 hours later it's still loading. So, it is not a good idea to use the frame buffer to extract the image with alpha?

a 300 MPx image, likely at 32bpc, is always going to be a pain to work with.
If you had max or maya, you could split the alpha out directly.
Can you not force the .exr extension in vray for rhino? That would at least save you the file size and disk access pains...Lele
