  • Enabling texture in Vraylight produces considerable noise

    Hello,
just ran into a little problem here. When I put a gradient map or any other texture into the texture slot of a vray light, I get a lot of noise in the RawShadow render element. If I disable the texture, everything is fine again. The settings for the light itself are quite high, 56 subdivisions. Everything else in the scene is pretty default. Also tried factor 10 for global subdiv multiplier and min 20 and max 50 for AA, the result is nearly the same... Also, the problem is visible in all of the other vray shadow elements. Would be nice to get it clean, because we often need these to adjust the shadows in post production.
Attached you can find some pictures and the scene files (max2011, Vray 2.30.01) for that specific problem. I hope it is just a scene specific prob...

It seems though that your shadow is also weaker with the texture on so it might be vray's early termination giving it less sampling since it contributes less to the final image?

It's a pretty dark area there. You might want to tell Vray gamma in color mapping to use 2.2, and maybe "don't affect colors" if you wanted the same level of drama in the shot. Using Vray gamma of 2.2 will help it clean up some of that noise in my experience.

I think there may be a bug there. We had this happen on the show too, we ended up making the image size really small, but always still got the noise.

Thanks for the input. The gamma in the scene is already at 2.2, so the sampling should be okay. Also, the problem doesn't go away when I raise the light intensity, the noise pattern stays exactly the same.
Sadly making the image size really small is no solution for us, because we are working for print with extremely high resolution...

          Regards

Just to be clear, the vray gamma in the color mapping is 2.2? Or just the max gamma?

You can clear the noise in RawShadow render element by decreasing the Adaptiveness parameter.
If this parameter is set to 0 - the level of the noise will be minimum - according to our tests it is acceptable under 0.25

                  Svetlozar,
tried it and it works. Thanks very much!
