  • Backburner wont save completed renders

Ive had this before but have forgotten the workaround, so any help greatly appreciated, as I have zero time to resolve.

I have 20 x 6k images to render, and everything works fine on each until it comes to writing to disk. When the rendering is complete BB returns some cryptic msg about a TIFF error (even if i'm writing PNGS) and then just restarts the rendering from the start (see screen) without writing anything to disk??

When I came in this morning I didn't have one finished image, because it had just sat there all night failing to write to disk after each COMPLETED render, and then restarting. I am writing a number of passes for each image, and using the VFB.

Anyone able to jog my memory as to what autodesk bullshit is causing this?

    thanks in advance.....

lol, gotta ton of space so not that.
Seems to do it regardless of saved format. actually the error message doesn't make any sense because I'm not opening anything - i'm trying to save.

you are most likely running out of memory. Render into vrimg that should save just fine. Then convert the vrimg to format you need. Holding a 20k image in ram is a lot not to count the memory for the 3d and other stuff.

So if using Vrimg how do I open my passes into photoshop without using the VFB or buying additional warez?
If using EXR how do get my passes - the output seems to be RGB only?

fyi I normally save separate TIFS for each pass and use the script/load files into stack in photoshop for my comp.

Why can I not simply save my passes as any format without being restricted by memory?

                      cheers.

Its the way different formats are stored/saved. For example tiff/PNG has to be fully saved in to ram and then copied to HDD from what I remember. Which low memory PC will fail to do and crash -if u render 20k+

Where as EXR's can be saved strip by strip or bucked by bucked to ur hdd as it renders so its saved memory.

that's interesting I didn't know that. My images are only 6k but i needed to render 20 of them

........Ok I just read that I cant have the passes without using the memory FB - pretty lame.

Uh its been long since I used max...but if u don't use VFB and in EXR configuration file(select format and press options/settings) you should be able to pick passes you want to add and thats it.

                              Just checked the official documentation

Save separate render channels - this option allows you to save the channels from the VFB into separate files. Use the Browse... button to specify the file. This option is available only when rendering to a memory frame buffer. If rendering is done only to a raw image file, the render channels can be extracted from that file after rendering is complete.
