  • Vraymesh Point Cloud

Whenever I convert a model to a vraymesh I can never seem to view the point cloud of the mesh in 3dsmax. Is there a particular setting that I should be checking ? I make sure export point cloud is on...but I only ever see one point representing the mesh if viewed as point cloud.

Am I missing the point of point clouds for vraymesh ? I thought it was supposed to be a quick representation of the mesh for viewport speed.

point cloud is used for rendering. idea is as you get further away from the camera the geometry is simplified until after a certain distance it is a single point. ive never got it to work properly but i didnt try for a while so maybe its more useful now.

Oh I see. A bit different from the point cloud style found in forest pro for example.

Vlado, is there a way you could implement a point cloud preview mode only similar to forest pro. It is very useful and a much better preview than the edges etc.

          Hi Steve,

The existing display settings for proxy objects give us the opportunity to use four different type of view port preview. For low "faces in preview" values the view port speed is very fast and some basic detail of the object surface will be only visible.
However, your suggestion to add additional point cloud option will be forwarded to the developers for consideration.

Thanks. I'm just going on how I use forest pro and railclone point cloud preview. The point cloud previews are fantastic. You can see a lot of points close up and a reduced amount when further away, making viewport speed great when there are a lot of objects on screen.

+1 for point cloud preview in viewport.

i had the same issue as you few months back thinking that point cloud would be for the viewport

                  Hello,

Can someone please explain to me the point of Vray Point cloud? What exactly is it's purpose of it?, is it supposed to make renders go faster or something? ran a few test and other than making stuff look horrible, I can see it useful in any way.

                  I would appreciate any clarification.

                  Thank you!

It is useful when you have objects that are far away from the camera. They will be rendered as points/low detail in order to save memory.
There is a proxy option for "Level multiplier" which controls the distance to switch from regular mesh to point clouds.
