  • Vray Environment multipliers not working?

Hi! I put an HDR on the GI Environment and in the Reflection too... but is giving way too much light to my scene, so I lowered the multiplier, and makes no difference, lowered down to zero, still no difference, raised it up to 100, still the same... is that thing broken or I'm using it incorrectly?

Also using the VRAYHDRI texture to load the HDR, and the thing to make it brighter or darker, does not really behave like an exposure control for floating point images, looks like things over 1 are being clipped out, and I totally miss the way the Final Render HDR loader handles it. Having curves to select the black and white clipping points or exposure would be really nice.

    Thanks!

The multiplier in the Environment section is only for the color; it does not affect the texture in any way.

The VRayHDRI multiplier is exactly that - a multiplier, not an exposure value (i.e. the neutral value is 1.0 and not 0.0; if you want to make the image half as bright you need to type 0.5 and not -1.0 etc).

As far as I know, the current OpenEXR loader in 3ds Max is written by Cebas, feel free to use that one instead of VRayHDRI if you like it better.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

I see what you mean.. it is only for the color swatch on the left of it.... its confusing being in there one would think it affect anything....

so how one adjust the exposure of the HDR used in the environment then?

It depends on what texture you used; if you used a 3ds Max Bitmap texture, you can use the RGB Level parameter in its Output section to control its brightness. Or you can do that in the HDR/OpenEXR loader setup. If it's VRayHDRI, you can use the overall/render multipliers.
