gradient is texture you use or 3ds max plugin? If texture make sure its not compressed and its not JPG. Try 2d displacement maybe? I'm not sure what cause steps never seen it b4 tbh.

it's a jpeg and 2d works fine, but I have the corners that need to miter.

Can you use gradient straight out of max rather than saving it to JPG? JPG has very BAD complression. I advise using TIFF + LZW compression or EXR + ZIps...

your "edge length" is on default 4 pixels. Change it to 2 (it will use more ram, but look much better) In extreme cases you can set it to 1 pixel, but that will make your render CRAWL very slowly
(leave displacement on 3D mapping type)

subdivide your faces that have displacement before rendering. Sometimes large flat areas with openings will get split up by vray into long skinny triangles. Siding like that is especially prone to get that jagged look. Sometimes it's quicker to just model the siding instead of tinkering with displacement.

Can you attach sample scene along with the texture for investigation?
