  • switched to VRAY 3 - DR not working with old scenes

    Hello,
I recently switched my workstation and render nodes to vray 3.
I first made some basic tests, creating simple scenes, first only on my workstation, then with the render nodes and everything worked fine.
Then I wanted to try with some recent projects made with vray 2.x. They render fine on my workstation, by always fail in distributed rendering mode. The scenario is always the same :
    - render host is added
    - scene transferred to renderhost
    - warning : render host is not responding.
I attached a screen capture of the V-Rcay messages window.

I noticed that if I make a new scene and merge the old one inside, then it will render fine in DR. So I guess the objects in the scene are OK but some parameter in the file itself is causing some trouble with the new version of V-Ray. Any clues on what may be the cause ?

    Thank you very much.

    Hi,

It looks like something in the scene breaks the DR process.
Would it be possible to send us this scene for further investigation?
If yes, please contact us via our support mail (support@chaosgroup.com) and we will supply or FTP server to upload the files. It will be very helpful if you include information about the exact 3DS Max version and additional plugins (if such are used in the scene).

    Thank you very much.

I have the same issue with existing scenes, DR doesn't work, same loop as in the screenshot from theedge.

Is there a solution other than merging into a new scene?
Merging isn't an option for me because there are a lot of file-linked AutoCAD files, that have to be kept up to date.

Unfortunately I can't share the scene at this moment. Is there a way to see why the scene doesn't render on the nodes? The VRay log doesn't seem to detect/store the error.

Update: for some reason the render nodes render fine if the spawner is started manually, instead of as a service. The service is set to use the same user credentials for log on though, and that works fine with some other scenes. Weird...

Is it Max 2015? If yes, we have an issue with spawner registered as a Windows service for this 3DS max version. Our developers are working on it right now.
Meanwhile you could start it manually or copy a shortcut to the Windows start up folder to load it automatically.

Yes it's Max 2015 x64 with SP2 on Win7 x64, glad you found the problem. Starting the spawner manually works fine for now.

Updated to VRay 3.00.08 (Max 2015 x64 on Win 7 x64) on workstation and all slaves, but some DR slaves that are running through a service, still keep restarting. The still appear in V-Ray message window as 'not responding'.

When started manually by launching the spawner from the Start menu it doesn't happen. Is there a fix for the service version?

The bug is not fixed even in the latest official release.
                We'll keep you posted.

                  Update:
One of our developers informed me that this is actually Autodesk/3DSMax Issue.

Please update your 3DSMax to the latest available Service Pack.
Then make sure that VRaySpawner service is configured to log on with a real-account not with local service account as it is by default.
Run another test with version 3.00.08 and let us know if the issue is still there.
