Displacement is already slow so, I'm putting on corner boards and keeping in 2d.

it depends on what your base mesh is. If your quads are nice and even - and reletivly dense then you don't need to lower the edge length that much or raise the max subdivs. But uneven quads will produce such result where tessellation is needed more in some areas then others.

          Try vector displacement
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

I remember going down that route before and it didn't matter. Again, 2d is fine.
