  • Phoenixocean texture bug

I don't think I am doing anything wrong but when I am close up to the plane using vray displacement with the phoenixocean displacement shader I can see the subdivision lines.

    That's very interesting.
Would it be possible to attach that scene for investigation?

Here you go. It occurs for the first 3-4 frames. I am close to the ocean plane but it is still quite odd. Can you let me know when you have downloaded it please.

What is the exact version/service pack of V-Ray/3DSMax and OS that you are using.
I've just rendered the scene with the latest versions of V-Ray and Phoenix but I couldn't reproduce the issue.
Here how frame 4 looks like in our environment:

          Os: win 7 64bit
          3dsmax 2014 - SP3
          Vray: 3.10.03
Phoenix: 2.2.0 - not sure if this is relevant.

Did you try frame 0 ? It definitely does it for me there.

seems like edge length related issue.
just for curiosity, why you are using vray displacement? some issues in our ocean rendering perhaps? if so, tell us to fix them

I'm assuming you mean you can create the phoenix ocean from directly within Phoenix simulator ? I thin I tried this but I cannot remember why I used this other method. May have been render times or something.

Yes, I did increase edge length to reduce render times.

I'm intrigued now about the other method for setting up the infinite ocean ?!

just create coarse simulator, enable liquids, initial fill up, start sim for 2-3 frames and set the input on direct frame. this will provide you infinite ocean even if the simulator is outside the view

yes it will. the displacement state is based on the rendered frame index, not on the cache index. you can have only single frame rendered in the entire animation, the simulator's content will be not animated, but the displacement will be.

Thanks. This seems to be working well. The only issue I have is that the simulation area seems to be slightly sunk compared to the rest of the ocean.

I have one more problem. I've calculated about 5 frames at the beginning. The direct frame index is set to 5 as in the viewport it looks like that is when the fill up is complete. Thing is that the ocean will not render past frame 5.

why you render the simulator at all? put it outside the visible area, you need it just to generate the extension
