  • Panorama with Cube 6x1 Cam mirrored?!

    Hey!

I currently do some tests with the new stereoscopic panorama feature and think there is a bug in the Cube 6x1 camera type - or, i missed something

This is a simple setup with a PhysicalCamera, a VrayStereoscopic helper (eye distance; 6,5; focus method: rotation; adjust resolution) and a Cube 6x1 camera type. The attached image is rendered with a 6:1 aspect.

As you can see the camera is mirrored and the two camera sides (left/right) are swapped (see the little red/blue box in the middle). The left side of stereoscopic image is for the right eye, and the right side for the left eye.
If i change the camera type to Spherical panorama and adjust the aspect ratio/resolution everything renders fine.

    Any suggestions are welcome!
    Cheers!

It seems that the mirroring problem is a matter of the viewing software. V-Ray maps the cube sides as viewed "outside" the cube.
I don't think that the left/right camera sides are swapped. The little red/blue box looks as expected - the blue side is wider in the left view and the red cube side is wider in the right view.

Okay.. then this is a feature and not a bug

Are you sure?! Isn't it vice versa? Because, the blue side is from "inside" the cube camera the left side of the little box. If the blue side appears wider, then you looking on it with your right eye.. shouldn't it then on the right side of the stereoscopic image?

            Hello!

I would not call it nether bug nor feature. It is rather a lack of support for certain viewers.
Some viewers expect just the kind of cube mapping on your picture - it looks just fine when using the Oculus 360 viewer on Gear VR. It is also looks ok when imported as an environment in the "Virtual Desktop" Oculus Rift application.

The cube sides could be arranged and oriented in lots of different ways and there is not a widely adopted "standard" order.
We use the following cube sides order: right, left, top, bottom, back, front. There are 720 possible combinations of this order.
Every side could be rotated and/or flipped and this results in 8 possible orientations of a cube side, so there are 8^6*720 possible 6x1 cube maps. There are also 3x2 cube maps.
Currently we only support the 6x1 arrangement that is accepted by the Oculus 360 viewer.

            Cheers!

              Hi again!

About the eye swap issue - I've attached a left/right shot of my desk using a stereo camera:

It is visible that the left side appears wider when you look with your left eye.

                Hey Vasil!
                Thanks for clarification.

For me/us as company it's more a question of workflow and pipeline development. It's not the problem to flip the sides or to "swap the eyes" - it's only the question if this is a normal behavior with we have to deal with it or is it a unwanted behavior which will be fixed (and we have to adjust our pipeline) Now it's clear.

I had a wrong reasoning. You're right: of course the eyes on my panorama image are not swapped.. only the sides of the box are mirrored (in reason of the "outside" rendering).

Thanks for your replies and again for clarification.
