  • Problems rendering really large pics.

    Hi,

I should make a render that is 20K pixels wide. I am running out of memory at the early preparing stages. I have 32 gigs of ram. Even if I try to region render smaller area I run out of memory. Any ideas how I could make this work? Should I render irradiance pass at lower resolution and then render at the final resolution. Does that give any momery help?

In render settings under VFB there is a section to display "preview only". Type in the resolution in this window (untick get resolution from max). Make sure you save the image in this section. Either vrimg or exr.
In max, type something small like 2 X 2 (just so that nothing is in ram there)

Render. It will give you a small preview of the render while actually rendering large. Give it a quick test with a region
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

      Check out this guide:
      http://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/V...y+Large+Images

If you also have displacement/subdivision surfaces in the scene, you can increase the "edge length" for the displacement.

      Best regards,

        Hi,

Thank you two so much for the help. It's rendering fine and memomy consumption is only 7,2 gigs.

I have another question about this technique. Is it possible to have render elements rendered this way?

Ofc - they will render along with main image. I rendered 25k image once with it and with render elements.

With this technique render elements won't show on vfb and they won't render directly to folders either. So I guess I have to enable something that was disabled with this technique?

If I enable memory frame buffer then it works ok but ain't the whole idea of this technique to disable memory frame buffer?

With these settings all channels will be rendered in one EXR file , after that you can split that by native VRay tools i think , or find a simple CMD line open source tool to split into render elements. Or open VRImg file in VRayFrameBuffer and save those one by one (never tried that though might work)

It worked fine with vrimg file. So now it's working ok.
