Heya Folks!
We're doing a lot of large environment scenes at the minute and xref-ing a lot of things to save on file size. Turns out if you xref in a vray sun which has a low multiplier like 0.01 so it can be used with normal cameras, it seems to ignore the multiplier and your render will be overexposed. If you open the render_me.max file and hit render you'll see this. The scene has nothing in it, everything is xref'd from the other file.
Cheers!
John (and daniel that found this)
